July 21 2010 National Tug of War Day

July 21 is National Tug-Of-War Tournament Day. It’s been years since I’ve actually participated in a tug-of-war. However, I think a tug-of-war today would be a lot of fun, especially given this is Olympia and the Washington State Capital. All of the political and community battles or intelligent debates, could be remedied or at least supported with a good tug-of-war. Any takers?

Day 3 of 365 Priest Point Park & Ellis Cove Trail

Alright, this gem of a park in Olympia has been suggested to me both online and offline numerous times this week, so as a “non-food” thing to do (I told you I love to eat, so the first two days covered some Olympia favorite eateries) I bring to you Priest Point Park along with Ellis Cove Trail! Located at 2600 East Bay Drive NE, Olympia WA, the park has a deep and rich history. From the Olympia City website:

Missionaries of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate came to this area in 1848 to minister nearby Indian tribes. The site was claimed as St. Joseph’s of New Market and was led by Father Pascal Ricard. Father Ricard and three other priests cleared the land, planted a large garden, built a chapel and operated a school for Indian boys. The Squaxin Indians were the immediate neighbors while the Nisqually, Puyallup, and Snoqualmie tribes used the mission as a trading center. Pascal left the mission in 1857 and the mission closed in 1860.

The park became a property of the City in 1905, thanks to Olympian T.J. Kegley, Brown (first name unknown), Elias Payne, and P.M. Troy. The landscaping at the park is a result of numerous volunteers. The Leopold Schmidt family has also given many gifts to the park over the years.

From the Yelp reviews of Priest Point Park, the park rates about 4.5 stars and “features a great kid’s park that has wheelchair accessible play structures and swings.  Lots of big trees and a nice view of Bud inlet (part of Puget Sound). You can run into mosquitos as you walk closer to the beach in the Spring so be sure to bring bug repellent or wear long sleeved clothes and pants.” (quoted from Yelp by Stephen I.)

I’m sure during the better weather days, this park is great for any day trip with the family and kids and also for a bit of walking along Ellis Cove Trail.  Again some info from the Olympia City site:

At the heart of this 314-acre regional nature park is one mile of saltwater shoreline. Ellis Cove is tucked away inside the park and the Ellis Cove Trail further enhances access to more parkland and the views of downtown Olympia and State Capitol buildings.

Day 2 of 365 takes us to another eatery, this time Brewery City Pizza!

Okay, I’ve had some good pizza, and Brewery City Pizza, with three locations, one in West Olympia at 2705 Limited Ln W, (360) 754-7800; one in Lacey at 4353 Martin Way E, (360) 491-6630; and one in Tumwater at 5150 Capitol Blvd SE, (360) 754-6767, certainly does not fail to live up to it’s award winning Best of South Sound designations!

Yes, they also have a Facebook page (Brewery City Pizza in Olympia on Facebook) and according to their website, have been serving up pizza in the Olympia area since 1982.  I was lucky enough to pop into the Lacey location and yes, yummy for sure!
